How can you prepare?
3 Simple Steps

Seniors

Senior citizens may face additional challenges during an emergency. During some situations, you may be homebound for several days.  There are a few things you can do to be better prepared before such a situation occurs.

Adapt your Emergency Plan for any special needs

  • Medical supplies: If you rely on electrically powered medical equipment, contact the supply company about back-up energy sources (e.g. batteries, generators).  Talk to your oxygen supply company about emergency replacements.

  • Set up a personal support network: Select someone who can check on you during an emergency and who will help with sheltering-in-place or evacuation. You should be comfortable sharing your health history and needs with the people you choose to be part of your network. Make sure you discuss plans with these people before an emergency occurs.

  • Personal care assistance:  If you receive assistance from a home healthcare agency or in-home support provider, find out how the provider will respond in an emergency. Designate back-up or alternative providers that you can contact in an emergency.

Additions to your Emergency Supplies Kit and Go Bag:

  • Necessary medications and supplies
  • Extra mobility aids, including a manual wheelchair
  • A whistle to signal for help
  • Food for special dietary needs
  • Special sanitary needs
  • Important medical phone numbers
  • Emergency health information card: This card should be kept in your car, purse, wallet, wheelchair sack, Emergency Supplies Kit, etc.  It is helpful to keep multiple copies of this card in various places; however, do not forget to update the information as changes occur.  This card will help emergency responders determine what kind of treatment you may need.  The card should include your name and date of birth, information about medications (drug name and dosage), allergies, pertinent medical history (e.g. heart attack, high blood pressure, COPD, stroke, surgeries, etc.), communication or mobility difficulties, physician name, and phone numbers for at least two contact persons.
